Highlights | A Sculpture of Unity and Spirit

Twelve steeds, the rhythm and energy of action
Each horse head has its own expression and movement, representing the twelve months and the twelve traditional hours of the day — a year of steadfast effort and the beauty of rhythm.

A commanding composition, reimagined from painting
Inspired by Xu Beihong's Ten Steeds in Spring Mountains, the sweeping brushwork of Chinese painting is turned into sculptural rhythm, full of presence and meaning.

Exceptional craft: twelve horse heads joined seamlessly, one unbroken movement
Each horse head is formed separately and then joined. If the rhythm falters or a proportion is off, the whole structure loses its balance — the making is extremely demanding.

A collectible contemporary piece, symbolizing a leader's vision and the strength of a team
For the focal point of a leader's office or as a corporate gift, conveying a spirit of consensus and shared purpose.

Design Inspiration | From a Painting to the Shared Spirit of a Herd

Thousand Horses was inspired by Ten Steeds in Spring Mountains by Xu Beihong, a master of modern Chinese painting. The painting is famous for its ten horses, each galloping in its own way yet moving as one. Heinrich Wang transformed this image into a three-dimensional sculptural group, using twelve horse heads to express a contemporary spirit of strength and grace, with unstoppable momentum.

Each horse stands for a state of mind and a moment in time: the calm before setting out, the rising readiness to charge, the courage at the front. Though their poses differ, they all point in the same direction — like the diverse individuals of an organization, running together toward a shared vision.

Design Concept

This work was inspired by Ten Steeds in Spring Mountains, a well-known painting by Xu Beihong, the early twentieth-century artist celebrated for his horses. Its ten steeds in a single scene show the full range of the horse's bearing and spirit.

Thousand Horses is composed of twelve spirited horse heads, each with its own expression, waiting only for the command to unite and charge across the world. The twelve horses stand for the twelve months and the twelve hours of the day — effort given fully toward a goal. In its rhythm and movement, the work expresses shared purpose and many hands working as one, charging toward a magnificent era.

FAQ

What is the cultural meaning of Thousand Horses?

The work draws on the idea of many wills as one, charging together. Its twelve horses stand for the twelve hours and twelve months, expressing conviction, collaboration and sustained effort — a white porcelain sculpture symbolizing the strength of a team and the vision of its leader.

Where is Thousand Horses best displayed?

Ideal at the center of a study, meeting room, corporate reception area or living room, bringing cohesion and positive energy to the space. It is often chosen for promotions, openings and corporate anniversaries.

Why is this piece so difficult to make?

The twelve horse heads are sculpted separately by hand and joined one by one through firing. Any error in proportion throws the structure out of alignment, so many trial firings and adjustments are needed before the whole piece moves as one.
