Artist Dialogue: On Qi, Form, and Stillness

Q: What inspired the concept behind “Form-Giving”?
Heinrich Wang: Curator Dr. Xiong Peng-Zhu structured the exhibition around four pillars: Essence, Function, Making, and Transformation. Drawing on breakthroughs in technique and historical aesthetics, we explored how qi—life’s inner force—can be translated into sculptural form. From there, the themes of Life, Poetry, Wind, and Spring emerged, each representing distinct energetic states and compositional languages.

Q: Can you elaborate on the metaphor of “Form-Giving”?
Heinrich Wang: As Mencius wrote, “The will commands qi; qi fills the body.” Qi is intention made visible. In ancient Chinese aesthetics, “qi yun sheng dong” means spirit brings vitality to form. Qi is will, atmosphere, power, and beauty. It must be shaped—into sculpture, into gesture. I strive to translate this upward surge into form—whether as flowing curves, monumental presence, or dignified stillness.

Q: How were the four themes developed?
Heinrich Wang: Each theme comes from how I experience qi. Bloom of Life captures the joy of creative breakthroughs; Bloom of Poetry reflects my admiration for noble freedom; Bloom of Wind expresses poise and refined virtue; and Bloom of Spring is the purest force—willpower sculpted into grandeur.

Q: What does “stillness through motion” mean to you?
Heinrich Wang: “Stillness through motion” is my most consistent creative goal. As the world accelerates and values shift rapidly, I want to make works that are quiet—but hold immense internal energy. Stillness is not absence of movement, but a deeper kind of momentum.
