The Dragon's Ascent teapot is the most technically demanding piece in the Dragon's Ascent series. Four main components — body, spout, lid, and dragon handle — are formed separately and joined while the clay is still workable. Every join point must account for the shrinkage that will occur during high-temperature firing, so that after the kiln, the structure is sound, the lid sits true, and the dragon handle retains its movement. The suspended portions of the dragon form are most prone to deformation at temperature; every finished teapot with the dragon's motion intact represents careful, sequential handwork at each stage.

The spout continues the dragon's raised-head imagery — the pour angle and spout arc are calibrated so that liquid flows cleanly without dripping. Lifting the lid is the opening gesture of the occasion: the lid knob resolves in the arc language of the dragon body, and the act of removing it and setting it aside is itself part of the ritual the set creates.

The cup is identical to the Dragon's Ascent Cup — L12 × W8.5 × H9.4 cm, three-footed, with the dragon handle that guides a deliberate grip. Placed beside the teapot, the proportional contrast between the two is itself a composed statement: the teapot presides, the cup waits.

Dragon's Ascent began with a cup. Heinrich Wang wrote in his book Ming Bai Xue (明白學 — The Art of Clarity):

"At the end of every demanding day, coming home to a short period of reading always brings a quiet sense of abundance… Water, tea, coffee, or a small drink — each can elevate this composure in its own way. But the vessel used must be equal to the quality of the moment: it must honor the rare elegance of this time, and answer to the sacred atmosphere one has created for oneself… And so I designed a cup for myself, for exactly this kind of occasion — crafted with care, to witness and accompany the precious, unhurried moments of a life in the city."

The cup was designed for one person. The teapot and cup set extends that intention into the space between people: the same composure, the same deliberate presence, now shared. Where the cup is the instrument of a private ritual, the teapot is the instrument of a gathering — however small, however quiet. The dragon on the teapot presides over both.
