Dancing with the Sea

Riding the wind, moving with the current

Dancing with the Sea is a white porcelain teapot, cup, and saucer set shaped by three design languages: the ruyi (如意) auspicious form, the leaping fish, and the movement of ocean waves. A small fish leaps from the base of the cup handle — symbol of abundance and the courage to move forward. The saucer carries cloud-wave ruyi patterns, water's softness made porcelain. The teapot spout rises like the first crest of a wave. Heinrich Wang writes: "Riding the memory of the wave — the exhilaration of moving with the wind, with the current, with the momentum — and the wisdom of opening the heart and expanding the horizon." Available individually or as a complete teapot and two cup-saucer sets.

Why This Piece

Ruyi form — the shape of wishes granted.

Every element of Dancing with the Sea takes its form from the ruyi (如意) — one of the most enduring auspicious symbols in Chinese cultural tradition, meaning "as you wish" or "as the heart desires." Heinrich Wang built the ruyi curve into the teapot body, the cup, and the saucer — so that the blessing is not applied as decoration, but embedded in the form itself. Every time the cup is held or the saucer is placed, the wish is present.

The leaping fish — courage hidden in the handle.

A small fish leaps from the base of the cup handle, carrying the traditional wish nián nián yǒu yú (年年有餘) — abundance year after year — and the spirit of something that moves forward through resistance. The detail is not immediately visible; you find it when you hold the cup. Like genuine courage, it does not announce itself. It is simply there, doing what it does.

Cloud-wave saucer — the sea, held still.

The saucer surface carries ruyi cloud-wave patterns — water's softness and forward energy captured in porcelain. Each time the cup is set down and lifted again, the gesture moves through that stillness. The porcelain does not move. The sea inside it does.

The teapot spout — ceremony begins with the pour.

The teapot body is round and generous; the spout rises with the slight lift of a first wave. Every act of pouring enacts the design's philosophy: not forcing, not straining, but moving with the momentum that is already there.

Design Detail

The three pieces of Dancing with the Sea form a complete visual scene when placed together — the teapot presides at the center, the cup and saucer gather around it, their shared ruyi language creating a continuous flow of line that moves across the table like a slow wave. At rest, the white porcelain holds the energy of the sea in stillness.

The leaping fish handle detail requires precise attachment at the clay stage, with the fish form calculated to survive firing without losing its definition through shrinkage. The ruyi curves demand that every arc in the teapot body and cup saucer be calculated with equal precision — the more fluid the line, the more exactly it must be planned. Every finished piece in which the curves flow without hesitation and the fish leaps with full clarity is a piece in which that discipline has been completely hidden.

Design Concept

Sculptural Flying Fish Handle

The flying fish is seamlessly integrated into the ruyi-inspired handle.

Its delicate lines must retain structural strength throughout the high-temperature firing process, making it one of the most technically demanding details of the piece.

Precision-Fitted Ruyi Lid

Both the lid and body are formed with continuous curved surfaces.

After firing at 1300°C and undergoing approximately 15% shrinkage, the lid must still maintain a precise fit and uninterrupted flow of form.

Oceanic Layers of Light and Shadow

The pure white porcelain surface is left unadorned.

As natural light changes throughout the day, subtle reflections and shadows emerge across the curves, recalling the shifting textures of sunlight on the sea.

Occasions or Usage

Solo or Shared Tea Moments — Perfect for a meditative pause or a heartwarming exchange.

Aesthetic Décor — Adds a poetic touch to desks, reading nooks, or display cabinets.

Cultural Gifting — A meaningful art piece and a refined gift of blessing.

Ideal For

Lovers of mindful living — Those who savor elegance, tranquility, and meaningful design in daily moments.

Premium gift seekers — Ideal for housewarming, career promotion, or seasonal gifting.

Collectors of modern Eastern art — A fusion of contemporary minimalism and symbolic heritage.

What does the leaping fish on the cup handle mean?

The fish carries two layers of meaning. The first is a traditional blessing: in Chinese, (魚, fish) is a homophone of (餘, abundance, surplus) — the wish nián nián yǒu yú (年年有餘, abundance year after year) is among the most universal auspicious phrases in the culture. The second is a design philosophy: a fish leaping from the water is the image of something that moves through resistance with its own momentum — forward, without hesitation. The detail is placed at the base of the handle, not immediately visible. Like the courage it represents, it does not announce itself. It is simply present, and in motion.

What occasions is Dancing with the Sea suited for as a gift?

The ruyi form and the leaping fish make Dancing with the Sea a natural fit for several occasions. Housewarming: ruyi carries the wish that everything in the new home will go as desired; the leaping fish brings abundance into the new space. Career promotion: the design philosophy of moving with the current, riding the momentum — chéng shì ér xíng — speaks directly to the spirit of a new professional chapter. Lunar New Year: the leaping fish (nián nián yǒu yú) and the ruyi auspicious form together form one of the most complete blessing vocabularies in the tradition. Ships in a gift box, ready to present.

What is ruyi (如意) and why is the whole set shaped around it?

Ruyi (如意) — literally "as you wish" — is one of the most enduring auspicious symbols in Chinese cultural tradition. The ruyi scepter, shaped from the flowing curves of sacred mushroom or cloud forms, has been associated for centuries with fulfilled wishes, smooth progress, and good fortune. Heinrich Wang took the ruyi curve as the foundational design language for the entire set — teapot body, cup form, saucer surface — so that the blessing is not applied as surface decoration, but present in the object's fundamental shape. To use Dancing with the Sea is to encounter that intention every time the cup is lifted.

Can Dancing with the Sea be used for both tea and coffee?

Yes.
Designed for both tea and coffee rituals, the pure white porcelain enhances the color and character of every beverage. Whether enjoyed alone or shared with guests, it brings a sense of calm, movement, and ceremony to everyday moments.
