Pearl Rising | White Porcelain Teaware · The Moment Before the Bloom

One long-awaited opening — tea as it was meant to be witnessed

Pearl Rising is part of Heinrich Wang's Mountain Water Line Series. The lid rises like a shell — gently domed, its edge rippling in petal curves. The mouth opens wide. When the lid is lifted, the tea leaves unfurl in full view, fragrance rising freely into the air. This is the moment the piece is designed around: the opening, the bloom, the unhurried emergence of something that has been held, waiting. The side handle and spout extend naturally from the body in the continuous line language of the Mountain Water Line.

Why Pearl Rising | Why This Set

The lid is the piece's defining gesture. Most teapot lids are functional closures. The lid of Pearl Rising is the ceremony itself — gently domed like a shell at rest, its edge moving in petal waves. To lift it is to open something that has been held. Heinrich Wang describes the experience in three phrases: "One refined essence. One solemn rising. One long-awaited opening." These are not metaphors. They are the sequence of actions the piece asks you to perform.

The wide mouth makes the invisible visible. Pearl Rising has the most open mouth in the Mountain Water Line — wide enough to watch the tea leaves unfurl as hot water meets them. Tightly rolled oolongs slowly open. The color shifts. The fragrance rises before a drop is poured. This is a quality of experience that a closed teapot cannot offer: the brewing itself becomes the first act of the ceremony.

The handle and spout are extensions, not additions. Pearl Rising shares its design lineage with the Mountain Water Line's Harmony set — the side handle flows from the body rather than attaching to it, and the spout emerges with the same understated continuity. Every line in the piece completes rather than interrupts.

The proportions are the concept made physical. At 23.2 cm wide and only 7.9 cm tall, Pearl Rising is the most horizontally expansive piece in the Mountain Water Line. It does not rise — it opens. The body spreads outward like a shell laid flat on water, like petals releasing across a surface. The dimensions themselves are the design statement.

Usage Scenarios

  • 八方新氣 藝術瓷器 珍珠 茶器 茶具 杯子 壺 居家生活

    Watching the tea open

Hot water meets the leaves through the wide mouth — and the brewing is visible. Tightly rolled high mountain oolongs uncurl slowly, releasing color and fragrance in sequence. Pearl Rising turns the act of brewing into the opening act of the ceremony, before a cup has been poured.

  • 八方新氣 藝術瓷器 珍珠 茶器 茶具 杯子 咖啡杯 茶杯 白瓷

Display in the study or tea room

With the lid closed and the set at rest on its petal saucer, Pearl Rising has the quality of a sculptural object — low, wide, quietly present. The piece continues to reward being looked at when it is not in use.

  • 八方新氣 藝術瓷器 珍珠 茶器 茶具 杯子 壺

A gift for the occasion that deserves it

Pearl Rising's imagery — essence refined, something solemn rising, the long-awaited bloom — suits any occasion marked by patience, by arrival, by something finally coming to its fullness. Ships in a gift box.

Design Detail

The petal-edged saucer holds the complete set — teapot at center, cups at rest — framing the whole as a single composed scene. The scalloped rim of the saucer echoes the lid's petal curves, so that the visual language of opening and blooming runs through every element of the piece.

The domed lid and its petal edge require each arc to be calculated for shrinkage before firing, so that after the kiln, lid and mouth meet cleanly without gap or misalignment. The wide mouth presents its own challenge: the larger the opening, the more prone the rim is to warping under its own weight at high temperature. Precise support structures are required throughout the firing to hold the opening true.

The side handle is formed as a continuous extension of the body line — the join must preserve the uninterrupted flow of the curve. Every finished piece in which the handle reads as grown rather than attached represents careful, unhurried work at the clay stage.

Design Concept

Pearl Rising is part of Heinrich Wang's Mountain Water Line — a series designed to bring a new vocabulary of reverence to the contemporary tea ritual. Within the series, Pearl Rising occupies a distinct position: where most of the Mountain Water Line teapots are vertical in emphasis — elevated bases, upward-reaching handles — Pearl Rising is lateral. It spreads. It opens. It blooms.

The design centers on the moment of lifting the lid. Wang describes it in three movements: "One refined essence" — the leaves held within, concentrated by time and heat; "one solemn rising" — the lid lifted, the shell opening; "one long-awaited opening" — the leaves unfurling, the fragrance released, the ceremony begun.

The wide mouth and the shell-form lid are Pearl Rising's defining departures from its Mountain Water Line siblings. The side handle and spout share the family's line language — continuous, uninterrupted, as though the forms grew from the body rather than were attached to it. But the lid, and the opening it presides over, are entirely Pearl Rising's own.

Occasions or Usage

The wide open mouth suits teas that reward being watched as they open:

High Mountain Oolong (Lishan, Dayuling)
Tightly rolled leaves unfurl slowly and visibly in the wide mouth. The color shift from pale to amber, the fragrance rising in stages. 90–95°C.

Oriental Beauty (Bai Hao Oolong)
Rich in color variation, the leaves open with layered visual depth. Honey fragrance emerges naturally from the open mouth. 85–90°C.

FAQs

How does Pearl Rising differ from Harmony, the other side-handle teapot in the Mountain Water Line?

The two pieces share a design lineage — both use a side handle that flows from the body as a continuous line, and both carry the Mountain Water Line's vocabulary of restraint and considered proportion. The difference is in what each piece centers on. Harmony is composed around the mountain-and-water imagery of its surface texture — the ridged rim, the wave-like body, the balance of opposing elements. Pearl Rising is composed around a single moment: the opening of the lid. The shell-form dome, the wide mouth, the petal-edged saucer — everything in the piece builds toward that one gesture. They are siblings with different temperaments.

What is the experience of brewing tea in Pearl Rising?

The wide mouth means the brewing is visible from start to finish. With a tightly rolled high mountain oolong, you can watch the leaves uncurl in real time — the color shifting from pale green to amber, the fragrance rising before a drop is poured. This is the quality of experience the piece is designed around: brewing as ceremony, the tea's opening as the first act. The tea itself becomes part of what is being offered to the people at the table.

Is Pearl Rising appropriate as a gift?

It is particularly well suited to occasions that carry the quality of patient arrival — something that has been building, and has now come to its fullness. A significant birthday, a retirement, a milestone that marks the transition from one phase to another. The imagery of Pearl Rising — essence refined, something solemn rising, the long-awaited bloom — speaks directly to these kinds of moments. Ships in a gift box with a carrier bag.
